This year celebrates the 40th anniversary of City Lights. That’s right, 40 years of innovative, creative, and challenging stories, producing over 230 mainstage productions, employing more than 1,000 artists, offering over 70 Lights & Music concert performances, and welcoming tens of thousands of community members into our theater. And we can’t wait for the next 40. With your help, our future will be even brighter.

Arts and culture are at the center of every vibrant, fun, healthy neighborhood. We have so many stories to tell. So much to give in regards to art, performance, and care. This shared experience, this relationship we have with our community, this engagement and connection between audience and artist and story, is who we are.

As the world around us changes, City Lights is honored to tell the important stories of our time and help amplify underrepresented voices. Thanks to strong leadership and the support of folks like you, we came through the pandemic strong and continued to offer art and healing to our community through online shows and digital experiences. We’re proud that we didn’t let anyone go from our organization and commissioned new works to keep artists employed. We also used that time to make sure our theater was as safe and comfortable as it could be, so that when audiences returned, we would be prepared.

Yet, we’re still faced with many challenges. The world is bouncing back, but many audience members still feel uncomfortable going to theaters. Unfortunately, the arts aren’t bouncing back as quickly as we had hoped– and the cost keeps rising. The price of building sets has gone up 100%.

We have lots planned for our future. World premiere productions, collaborations with other theaters in our area, and more high-quality, engaging, innovative storytelling from your longtime favorite artists and new emerging voices. And there are lots of ways you can support us on this journey! Our End of Year campaign is vital to our budget and our future, so will you please donate? Don’t know where to start? How about adding $40 to what you gave last year, in honor of our 40th anniversary. You can bring a friend to see a show, become a producer, or volunteer to help us on our adventure to start a capital campaign and find a permanent home for City Lights. Oh, did I mention we’re planning a big party on May 6th to celebrate City Lights’ 40th birthday? We’d love for you to join us.

With your help, City Lights will continue boldly on this journey. We will continue to grow our CLTC family and encourage more voices and deeper engagement between us and the community.
